Baltimore Magazine (Feb. 2003)
This week the Justice Department Inspector General criticized the US government's treatment of immigrants after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Looking back to the post WWI period and the research of John and Richard Ellesberry on their grandfather Vincent Tryzno, a Russian immigrant, Michael Anft gives us a sense of past government-sponsored anti-immigrant activities. Tryzno, active with the Union of Russian Workers, was arrested in 1919 during the first "Palmer Raids" and deported from Baltimore to Russia in 1921.

News From Babylon (6/3/03)
Pittsburgh is a bastion of trade unionism, as I found out on a recent visit. It takes great pride, too, in championing the underdog. Imagine my shock, when I picked up a copy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on May 31, 2003. On its commentary page, I found a Palestinian-bashing rant by one Charles Krauthammer. It was titled “Unless real steps are taken to curb terror, Mideast peace will never be achieved.” He sounds like a board member of Israel’s ruling political clique, the extreme right-wing Likud Party.

The Financial Times ran an editorial whose title is "Tax Lunacy: The US administration throws prudence out of the window." Big capital is worried about the directions of the Bush administration on economic and other issues. Immanuel Wallerstein believes the Bush policy is deliberate, though lunacy. He attempts to show how the U.S. hawks think by going back two centuries surveying ruling class responses to the French Revolution and the world revolutions od 1848 and 1968.

With more than 2 million people locked up in American jails and prisons, the United States has overtaken Russia and has a higher percentage of its citizens behind bars than any country in the world. A major cause: the "war on drugs" with the related disproportionate numbers of African-Americans and Latinos imprisoned for such offences. Scott Shane reports.
