This week the Justice Department Inspector General criticized the US government's treatment of immigrants after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Looking back to the post WWI period and the research of John and Richard Ellesberry on their grandfather Vincent Tryzno, a Russian immigrant, Michael Anft gives us a sense of past government-sponsored anti-immigrant activities. Tryzno, active with the Union of Russian Workers, was arrested in 1919 during the first "Palmer Raids" and deported from Baltimore to Russia in 1921.
