It is not the reformists' promise of freedom of expression and association that the Iranian working class rejected in the presidential election this year. What they refused to tolerate any longer is deteriorating economic conditions that neoliberalism brought them. "Mr. [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, who catapulted to president-elect from near obscurity as the appointed mayor of Tehran, campaigned on a populist message, promising to redistribute the nation's wealth, hold down prices, raise salaries and lift state-supported benefits for the poor."

Labor Movements: Is There Hope? By Gapasin & Yates

Fernando Gapasin and Michael Yates report that class struggle has been a one-sided affair the past 30 years. Capital has delivered a severe beating to labor around the globe. Economic stagnation struck most of the advanced capitalist economies, beginning in the mid-1970s. Then, capital went on the offensive. Governments and global lending agencies--World Bank and International Monetary Fund--began to implement policies that weakened workers power. The authors survey the situation and end with a discussion of labor's need to move to the left if it is to survive. Gapasin and Yates suggest that keeping higher goals in mind is a prerequisite for being able to win some power. The crisis workers face should lead the labor movement not to narrow its vision of what needs to be fought for, but to broaden it.

By rejecting the constitutional treaty, a majority of French and Dutch voters called for far-reaching changes at home and across Europe. Anne-Cecile Robert offers some preliminary pointers for the debate to come. Europe, Robert concludes, "must find a way to rebuild a specifically European social model. It should emphasise the central importance of public services, since they express values of social and territorial solidarity and are essential to the fight against inequality and insecurity."

Army National Guard enlists job agency
Faced with nationwide recruitment challenges, the Army National Guard has partnered with Labor Ready, a provider of temporary jobs for unskilled workers, in the hopes the Tacoma-based company's 700 branches across the nation can help boost the dwindling number of recruits.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ, June 25--A public meeting sponsored by the Minuteman Project-allied United Patriots of America (UPA) was disrupted today by a group of anti-fascist activists calling the group out on their trying to promote the hatemongering vigilantism that is currently being seen in the southwest US against Hispanics. The UPA was holding this meeting at the Bridgewater Sports Arena in an effort to recruit local residents opposed to immigration, but the fact that the keynote speaker was a member of two hate groups added another dynamic to what this group's agenda might be.
