The general impoverishment of the public realm has produced for adults an amazing amount of pervasive situational loneliness. Despite the fact that so many Americans own a car there is no place to go, at least no places of casual socializing unrelated to commerce. So the chat rooms and listserves of the Internet are supposed to take the place of actually being somewhere.

Israel’s Ariel Sharon is a law under himself. The UN, too, refuses to take him on for his criminal misdeeds. He belongs in the dock, next to Slobodan Milosevic, at The Hague, standing trial for War Crimes he has committed in Jordan, the occupied territories and Lebanon. Instead, he is invited to the White House for a photo op and tea.
