Zein Elamine & Koralie Hill
DAWN
Across the street from Union Station, a small group was distributing yellow armbands which called to resist the illegal detention of immigrants. Overseeing the distribution was Zein Elamine, a DC resident and activist with DAWN. DAWN is a coalition of
Left Turn,
Anti-Capitalist Convergence, DC Antiwar Network, and the
DC Statehood/Green Party. In October, Elamine said, the Coalition was able to shut down two army recruitment centers. â??People around the world are following these protests and asking the question if Bush canâ??t convince the people of the US, how can he convince the rest of the world to go to war."
Another participant Indymedia spoke with was Koralie Hill. She had fashioned a musical percussion instrument from parts of pots and pans, two Schlitz cans, and a shelf from an old refrigerator. She came to provide her musical statement in protest of the bombing in Iraq. Like so many participants she came with a friend as a matter of conscience, and not as a member of any of the many peace coalitions.
