April 12, 2005 on this day:

In 1861 Confederate batteries shelled Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor beginning the American Civil War. By this time the states of the Deep South had seceded from the United States. Most federal territory, including the forts, had been taken by Confederate forces without resistance. Fort Sumter, however, remained in Union hands. President Abraham Lincoln refused to give up the fort, and in April he sent an expedition to re-provision it. Confederate authorities considered this a hostile act and early on April 12 shore batteries opened fire on the fort. After 24 hours of being shelled Fort Sumter surrendered. Amazingly neither side suffered any casualties. The South had won a victory but bore the burden of firing the first shot of the war.
