In 1952 U.S. president Harry S. Truman ordered the steel plants in Youngstown, Ohio to be placed under federal control to avoid a strike. At the time the United States was involved in the Korean War, and Truman claimed that a steel strike would harm the war effort. This move was extremely controversial, as many of the working classes viewed Truman's act as a favor to big industry. Soon after this seizure the Supreme Court ruled that Truman had overstepped his executive authority.
