ALL OUT TO RALLY AGAINST MARYLAND'S RACIST DEATH PENALTY

SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 2005 at 2:00 PM

Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center ("Supermax")
401 East Madison Street
Baltimore, Maryland

This is an absolutely crucial time to demonstrate against executions in Maryland. Although the Court of Appeals stayed Vernon Evans' scheduled April execution, that does not mean we have already won. On the contrary, the delay is meant to ensure that the Court's final decision about Vernon Evans is one that has a broader significance for other death row inmates in Maryland after they dispense with the pesky UMD racism study, so that Maryland will have a clear green light for executions from now on. This is a matter of life and death for Vernon Evans and many others on death row who are claiming racial bias in their conviction. We must show Governor Ehrlich that we will not stand for him to ignore the racism study or allow him to charge forward with his murderous agenda. By raising our voices on Saturday we will defend the truth of the study that they wish to bury, which proves Maryland's death penalty is systematically racist, and launch the next phase of our campaign to save Vernon Evans. Just as importantly, we will show Vernon Evans and his family that while the State may try to strip him of his humanity, we consider his life to be valuable and worth fighting for.

There will be a bus leaving from the Takoma Park Metro to the Supermax at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. It will return from the Supermax at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $3, $5 solidarity (no one will be turned away for lack of funds).

This event is sponsored by the Campaign to End the Death Penalty. Call 202/271-8014 or visit stopexecutionsinmaryland.org for more details.
