March 31, 2005 on this day:

In 1862, during the U.S. Civil War, the Battle of Shiloh began. Fought in southwestern Tennessee, this became one of the bloodiest battles of the war with combined casualties of over twenty-two thousand. The battle lasted three days, and after a near defeat on the first day, Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant emerged victorious, and forced the Confederates to withdraw into northern Mississippi. Although the war in the West was far from over, this victory opened up the western Confederacy to Union advance.
