In 1886 Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton created the first batch of Coca Cola. Pemberton created Coca Cola not as a beverage, but as a patent medicine. These so-called health tonics were at their peak of popularity during the late nineteenth century, and when Pemberton put Coca Cola on sale he claimed it was a "brain tonic and intellectual beverage" that would cure a variety of ailments including hangovers, headaches, and stomach aches. The original version of Coca Cola contained cocaine and caffeine. The cocaine was removed in 1904, but the caffeine remains.
