Workers' Opening Day One Week Away

Day laborers in the United Workers Association organize for a living wage at Camden Yards. With Opening Day now one week away, workers are organizing to continue their history-making campaign. Last week, a break came when a dialogue re-opened with the Baltimore Orioles' owner, Peter Angelos. Angelos has made a committment to the United Workers Association that he and the Orioles would ensure that workers would be paid the city living wage of $8.85 an hour beginning this season.
Supporters from all over Baltimore City and all over the country wrote letters, faxed to Angelos's office, and signed hundreds of postcards calling on Angelos to honor his committment.

One letter writer wrote: "It has come to my attention that you reached an agreement with Homeless Persons Representation Project and the United Workers Association to ensure that workers do in fact earn a living wage at the stadium. I applaud you for this commitment, your efforts along with those of Knight Facilities Management will truly make a difference in the lives of some of our most impoverished city residents."

The UWA organized a student call for Justice at Camden Yards. Students gathered signatures on post cards to Angelos. During the day, Angelos's office contacted the UWA and confirmed their intent to honor their committment and ensure that day laborers for the first time in the U.S. win a living wage.

The UWA recently made history by winning the right to represent the 80 day laborers who clean Camden Yards and established a Code of Conduct that the temporary services will adhere to.

With one week to go all eyes are on the Orioles and Knight Facilities Management, the contractor responsible for the clean up of Camden Yards, to work out the details of ensuring a living wage for day laborers.
