March 15, 2005 on this day:

In 1916 General John Pershing led fifteen thousand U.S. troops into Mexico in pursuit of Mexican Guerilla General Pancho Villa. Over the previous few months Villa and his men had attacked Americans in Mexico and threatened to raid the towns along the U.S.-Mexican border. On March 9 five hundred of his men sacked the town of Columbus, New Mexico. In response, President Woodrow Wilson sent Pershing and his men to apprehend Villa. Over the next several months the Americans scoured Northern Mexico, but Villa knew the terrain well and had much support from the Mexican population. In January, 1917, the Americans withdrew. The issue of apprehending Villa was largely forgotten when the United States entered World War I later that year.
