March 4, 2005 on this day:

In 1829 Andrew Jackson was inaugurated as the seventh president of the United States. Jackson was the first president to come from a western state (Tennessee), and his inauguration was the stage for the wildest party in the history of the White House. Thousands of people arrived in Washington for the ceremony, many of whom were rural westerners and backwoods frontiersmen. That evening approximately twenty thousand people entered the White House and its grounds. They spent the evening singing, dancing, and drinking whiskey served from large tubs. At the center of the party was a 1,400 pound wheel of cheese that was reportedly consumed within two hours. At one point the crowd became so large and rowdy that Jackson was forced to escape through a window. The party lasted all night, and by the next morning every furnishing in the White House had been destroyed. Once observer compared it to the damage done by the British when they burned the mansion in 1814.
