In 1692, in Salem, Massachusetts, the witch trials began. Beginning in 1688, several teenage girls began acting strangely and claimed that they were the victims of witches. After prayer sessions did not relieve the girl's "fits," several women were arrested as alleged witches. One person confessed and even gave a physical description of the devil. A special court was convened and nineteen people were executed as witches. Within a few months, however, the governor of Massachusetts realized that the situation was getting out of hand and ordered an end to the trials. Ten years later the general court of the colony declared the trials unlawful, and in 1711 six hundred pounds was given to each of the accused or their heirs as restitution.

- The State of Massachusetts formally apologized for the witch trials in 1957.
