The coalition Kongre bwa kaiyman as well as many Haitian-Americans and North American supporters of democracy in Haiti will gather at the White House Monday, Feb. 28, the one year anniversary of the brutal overthrow of democractically elected President Jean Bertrand Aristide of Haiti. Protesters will include Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Gumbleton who has worked for Haitian democracy for many years. He and others intend to commit civil disobedience to draw attention to recent arrests and killings in Haiti by police trained by US and Canadian consultants. Since his departure, a government of neo-liberal exiles from Florida, installed by the US has been propped up by a UN force of 7400 soldiers. The country has been in constant turmoil since Aristide was forced to leave. The Haitian police, dominated by former disbanded army officers who are known human rights abusers, have regularly attacked urban neighborhoods that are stronghholds of Aristide's Lavalas party. At least 200 have been killed since September - including up to 100 killed by police at the national penitentiary in December. Aristide's last Prime Minister and other officials, as well as many Lavalas activists, have languished for up to a year in hellish prison cells without even going before a judge. Baltimore area activists are encouraged to attend. For information about future events and activities, and generally for information on Haiti, contact Tom Reeves at
