A few days before the tsunami, there was a massive underwater quake off the coast of Tasmania.

8.1 - which at the time they said it was the largest anywhere for 100 years or something (I just heard this on the radio and didn’t think too much of it at the time)

Buildings shook in New Zealand.

Surprisingly, there was no tsunami, and apparently residents of the remote settlement of Macquarie Island, which was the closest inhabited land mass, slept right through it. The story was something along the lines that it was just lucky that the plates moved in a certain direction, and that if they’d moved at a different angle, it would have unleashed a devastating tsunami on Tasmania, New Zealand and southern Australia.
