They Hunger & Thirst for Justice: The Survivors of Bhopal

More than 7,000 people died within a matter of days when toxic gases leaked from the Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India, in December 1984. Over the last 20 years exposure to the toxins has
resulted in the deaths of a further 15,000 people as well as chronic and debilitating illnesses for thousands of others for which treatment is
largely ineffective.

Rasida Bee, a trade unionist and Bhopal activist lost
five family members to the Bhopal tragedy as a result of cancer and is partially blinded by Union Carbide’s gases.

Sathinath Sarangi, a metallurgical engineer and journalist, turned Bhopal activist. He arrived in Bophal the day after the disaster and stayed on to found the Sambhavana Clinic, dedicated to the holistic treatment of gas-affected victims in Bhopal.
