KIEV: Ukraine’s pro-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich vowed Wednesday that tens of thousands of his supporters were ready to come to Kiev if his Western-leaning opposition rival wins a rerun presidential vote on December 26.

"During the orange crisis I didn’t want blood to be spilt. I asked the miners not to march on Kiev to prevent confrontation," Yanukovich said during a campaign stop in southern Ukraine.

"But today it is impossible to stop the popular movement in the regions, where people are signing up as volunteers," he said, adding that some 35,000 supporters had already done so.

Yanukovich repeated his charge that the mass protests organized by opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko after a November poll, which has since been annulled because of fraud, amounted to a "coup d’etat" financed by Washington.

"The US have for several years given money to Ukrainian non-governmental organizations, interfering in Ukraine’s internal affairs," he said.

"This is a coup d’etat with the help of a foreign nation... and if it is carried out, we run the risk of becoming a colony."

Both Yushchenko and Washington have repeatedly denied charges that the US government channelled money to Yushchenko’s campaign.

Yanukovich had been groomed by outgoing President Leonid Kuchma to take over after his decade in power.
