Howard Zinn will be speaking on "Reinventing Peace: Making it a Reality after 9/11?" at Shriver Hall on December 8, 2004 (Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus, 3400 N. Charles ST) at 8 PM. The event is sponsored by the MSE, the Ric Pfeffer Lecture Committee/PAC, JHU-SLAC, JHU-ACLU and the AFSC.
An acclaimed social critic and historian, Howard Zinn will speak on the topic of "Reinventing Peace: Making it a Reality after 9/11?" Zinn believes that America can preserve its existence through peaceful means with effective foreign policy and prevent domestic attack. Zinn authored "A People's History of the United States," which explains history from the perspective of the disenfranchised and powerless, as well as the plays "Marx in SoHo" and "Emma." Professor Emeritus of Boston University, Zinn taught at Spelman College, a historically black college and was involved in the civil rights and anti-war movements. Come and learn about how a nation can heal from a domestic attack and grow in peace. Please contact Laura Bennett at 410-323-7200. This event is free and open to the public.
Started in 1967, the Milton S. Eisenhower Symposium (MSE) is an annual lecture series featuring speakers from all over the world with diverse backgrounds. Completely an undergraduate venture, MSE is committed to igniting dialogue and debate on social issues of today in the Baltimore, DC, and Maryland community.
The Ric Pfeffer Lecture Fund sponsors progressive speakers and activities. It was established in memory of Ric Pfeffer, former Hopkins professor, activist attorney in the field of worker health and safety, and founding member of the Progressive Action Center (PAC). The Progressive Action Center opened in 1982 under the leadership of Ric Pfeffer and Research Associates Foundation. Today the center helps social activists to network, hold meetings (at cost), and work cooperatively for social change.
American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is committed to social change and justice through grassroots efforts. The AFSC and Baltimore Votes! helped to register over 2,000 voters for the November 2004 election with the help of dedicated volunteers.
At Johns Hopkins, the Student Labor Action Committee (SLAC) is a student group committed to a worker's right to fair treatment and wages on the campus.
The JHU-American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is committed to protecting student's rights and educating them about civil rights and civil liberties issues.
