Contact Sarbanes re: Public Access TV
This open letter is a call-out to contact Senator Sarbanes and ask that he or his staff contact Mayor O'Malley Today. Your call could help tip the balance of power to the people.
.
Dear Senator,
Mayor O'Malley and the City Council are just days away from a blatant violation of the public's trust. Federal law requires that monopoly cable franchises provide 5% of their revenues to support Government, Education, and Public Access TV.
The Mayor has negotiated a contract with Comcast Cable that does not provide any of the 5% for Public Access TV, while the mayor's channel receives over $1 million/year. The remainder of the Comcast funds are directed into the Mayor's budget to use as he likes.
Mayor O'Malley's justifications are transparent excuses. The Mayor is on the brink of a huge violation of public trust. I hope you can bring him to his senses, because it reflects poorly on the Democratic Party.
Jim George
Baltimore, MD
PS The Mayor will tell you that Comcast is funding Public Access TV. That's a lie of omission; Comcast's "training grant" of $47,500 per year over 12-years compares with $1.45 million/year provided to the District of Columbia's Public Access TV.
