Living Room Company presents...

"Woody Guthrie Dreams Before Dying"
by Michael Patrick Smith

After a sold out run at the Patterson last Spring, the Creative Alliance has asked us back for the longest run in the organizations history!

The influential folk singer, Woody Guthrie, spent the final thirteen years of his life bed ridden in a psychiatric ward, stricken with Huntington's Disease. Woody Guthrie Dreams Before Dying begins in the final moments of his life as he confronts his past in a world that exists between dreams and fleeting reality. He revisits his marriages, his time in the Merchant Marines and the ups and downs of a careening musical career. The portrayal of singer activist Pete Seeger, the legendary Cisco Houston, and the blues folk artist Leadbelly help to weave together scenes from Woody's life.

A letter from the playwright:

This past Summer I chased the ghost of Woody Guthrie across the United States, from the Coney Island shore line that claimed his ashes, through Okemah, Oklahoma where he was born, Pampa, Texas, into Topanga Canyon and onto the shores of Will Roger's State Beach just off Route 1 in California.

I have read the biographies, as well as Woody's own books, as well as hundreds of pages of his unpublished writings currently housed in the Woody Guthrie Archive. Letters, stories, poems and songs that nobody had the guts to publish. I have listened to his recordings, including hours of unreleased material. I have talked to folks that knew him well.

I have done all these things in the past several years and I have done them against the backdrop of an America that, in my mind, has gotten seriously off track.

I am still looking for Woody Guthrie.

This production is exciting because it is another opportunity to share my search with more people who, perhaps, will begin their own personal seach for Woody.
