Public Access Supporters Call for Council to Vote Down Comcast Contract.
Baltimore Grassroots Media recommends the contract be sent back to Board of Estimates for amendments.
Baltimore, MD – This Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at 8:15AM members of Baltimore Grassroots Media and supporters of Public Access TV will hold a press conference at City Hall Plaza. They will call on the City Council to vote down the proposed Comcast franchise renewal agreement, scheduled to take place Thursday, November 18 at 12:30 pm, and send it back to the Board of Estimates for amendment. A spokesperson from Baltimore Grassroots Media and other Public Access TV supporters will propose several amendments to the proposed contract.
Baltimore Grassroots Media maintains that the proposed 12-year contract is too long, and does not include full funding for public access operating expenses and reduces the number of PEG channels from 12 to 8. Additionally, the amendments made to the contract by the Board of Estimates, which approved the contract on November 10, remove the City’s right to terminate the contract if minority contracting goals are not met.
