Police Disrupt Reclaim The Streets Party, Manhandle Party People!
The Baltimore Police disrupted a peaceful Reclaim the Streets demonstration minutes ago.
Today, about 50 people met in a park, made signs, banners, and puppets. The goal of the meet-up was to march from The Meyerhoff, down Biddle, down St. Pauls, and assemble under the symbol of our liberty, freedom, and an upstanding model of what a president should be, The Washington Monument.
The march was enthuastically greeted by people walking the streets, workers shouting support out of their buildings, and to a lesser extent, those driving behind us.
When the march reached the base of the monument, the Reclaim the Streets was on, although one side of Charles St. was blocked, the nature of the geography of the Washington Monument circle did not prevent cars from traveling through, so no one driving had more than a very miniscule detour. They could still get to where they were going, and the partiers danced, had a dj, ate vegan food, waved to cars, and some even started a short game of dodgeball.
Shortly after dodgeball began, here come the cops. While we were, admittedly, blokcing part of a street, we were peaceful. The boys in blue, however, were not. After asking a few dull-bulb questions such as "Where is your permit?" and "Who's the leader of this thing?" They decided that the answers they were getting - no permit, we have no leader- they began grabbing random partiers and arresting them.
One was arrested for chanting, another for beating a drum, and as of now the other "reasons" are not known or there was no word on what happened to that person. The person in question broke away from the police, and while carring a bookbag filled with stuff outran a athletic-looking police officer with speed that can only usually be seen at the Olympics. He had him beat when he turned the corner, no idea if he won that race.
By my count, there were at least 4 arrests, maybe more. The peaceful group left the scene after much deliberation, and that is where this account ends. There was talk of a meeting and a rally for those arrested, there should be more information within the next few hours.
