Student Labor Action Committee
RALLY, Wednesday, April 3 @ 4pm
Garland Administration Building
Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus
This Wednesday, April 3rd, at 4:00pm, SLAC will return to the same site where it won wage increases for Hopkins employees two years ago, to rally against the poverty Hopkins continues to create and demand that Hopkins index a Living Wage for all its workers and sub-contracted employees. By July 2002, all Hopkins workers are slated to receive a wage of at least $7.75 an hour, but this is well below the current Baltimore City Living Wage of $8.20, which will increase again in July to approximately $8.50.
The rally will also protest Hopkins' land acquisition deal with the city government to develop a Biotechnology Park in East Baltimore. The deal, which is being contested by the Save Middle East Action Coalition (SMEAC), threatens to displace thousands of East Baltimore residents in return for paltry amounts of money, if anything. SLAC considers this an appalling slap-in-the-face to the residents of Baltimore that Hopkins can treat the city like a game of Monopoly, trading properties and displacing families at will.
At the rally, Baltimore community leaders, Hopkins workers, and students will all address the crowd about the perpetuating cycle of poverty that Hopkins produces through meager wages and land displacement. Guerilla Theater will highlight the Hopkins Administrationâ€(TM)s indifference, inaction, and treatment of its workers. Local community groups, unions, and Baltimore leaders will be in attendance joining the cause.
