Tickets (only $6 per program) are less than a night out at the cinema multiplex and the range of styles, subjects, genres and approaches to making movies is unlike anything else DC has to offer. The films cover subjects as diverse as the history of the legendary NYC art/punk space ABC No Rio (156 Rivington by Andrea Meller), comic book artist King Velveeda and his legal battle with Kraft over the usage of the “wholesome” Velveeda name (The King, The Lawyers, and the Cheese by B. Maher) a portrait of women living in Tajik who have been forced to become “live containers” smuggling heroine inside themselves (Live Containers by Orzu Sharipov), a hilarious documentary on the reunion of Stryper, the world’s first platinum-selling Christian heavy metal band from the 1980’s (Soldiers in Command by Matt Leum and Gregg Fiering),the true story of the uncompromising mastermind behind the most influential British band of the 90’s, done claymation style (The Oasis Story by Ian Svenonius), a documentary by Sam Green who explores the tragic downfall of Rollen Stewart AKA The Rainbow Man (The Rainbow Man 3:16), a documentary on the world’s first and only African American circus (Soul Circus by Dylan Griffin), and the critically acclaimed documentary Hot and Bothered Feminist Pornography by Becky Goldberg which takes a rare and empowering look into the pornography industry and feminist community to see how they intertwine within the politics and poetics of female sexuality.

In addition to the programs of shorts DCUFF will be presenting the Women in the Directors Chair series that showcases and celebrates the art and voices of the wide range of women making indie films. The Women in the Directors Chair will be Friday, May 21st at 7:40PM and will feature films by Anne Louise Bayly (Tree Lopping - part of the Just for Ladies film series ), Karen Hipscher (Arumwandre- experiments in home movies and found footage), Rebecca Fitz (43% - a documentary on the misconceptions of women who get abortions), Anna Geyer (Arapadaptor - a hand-made film created almost entirely without a camera using Chinese herbs, paint, tint, and bleach), Tyrell Shaffner (Different –a hilarious film about a straight boy in a gay world), and Lydia Ann Douglas (Nappy -the story of 14 black women & girls who decided to stop straightening their hair and "go natural.")
