First Event at 405 W. Franklin (April 17):
"AXIOM" at Gallery Four
Gallery Four is pleased to announce its first exhibition in over 18 months AXIOM, which will be on view from April 17 – May 29, 2004, with an opening reception Saturday, April 17, 6pm – midnight with a special guest performance by The Wilderness at 11:00pm. The opening reception for Axiom is a $3.00 minimum donation after 8pm. Axiom is a group show featuring new and recent works by emerging artists from Baltimore, MD; Greensboro, NC; and Boston, MA.
Jason Hughes renders landscapes and objects through drawing, sculpture, and video that suggest a physical sense of wander, direction, and inaccessibility, yet encourage a subjective notion of how we think we see ourselves. Hughes is a senior at The Maryland Institute College of Art and co-founder of Gallery Four.
Daniel Rich paints symbolic architecture encoded with power and submission such as concrete barricades, federal property, and corporate headquarters. He displaces these structures by rendering them in a graphically decoded style of hard edges and seductive colors. Rich is an MFA candidate in his final semester at The Museum School of Fine Arts, Boston.
Kendrick Shackleford is rooted in the formal concerns of line, edge, tone, and mass in drawing. His variations of geometric formations translate conceptually as renditions challenging our ability to see beyond our perceptions. Shackleford is an MFA candidate in his final semester at UNC Greensboro.
Wesley Smith and
David More are each sound, video, and performance artists asked to collaborate on a site specific installation utilizing sounds intrinsic to Gallery Four’s location and architecture. By dislocating and shifting the movement of local sounds they will appropriate the audience’s orientation in relationship to the space. Both Smith and More are resident artists at Gallery Four.
Gallery Four is a 10,000 square feet artists’ live/work/exhibition space located in downtown Baltimore, MD. Founded in 2000, Gallery Four has been recognized as the “Best Proof of Contemporary Art Life in Baltimore” by the Baltimore City Paper and has received a variety of other honors from PEEKreview, Baltimore Magazine, and The Washington Post. Furthermore, in December 2002 Gallery Four participated in a satellite exhibition for the first annual Art Basel Miami.
Axiom has been developed and realized by Jason Hughes with the help of other participating artists as well as with initial support from the Maryland Institute College of Art’s resident curator George Ciscle ‘s Exhibition Seminar. Additional support for Axiom has been generously provided by RADAR: Baltimore’s Arts and Culture magazine.
Scheduled appointments are recommended for all other times during the run of the exhibition. For further information please contact Jason Hughes directly at (443)-739-5491 or
