Spring Has Sprung
In between the bitter cold of winter and the biting insects of summer, there is a sliver of time during which outdoor chores at the sanctuary are particularly pleasant. That time has come. The birds are even happier than we are, since the coming of spring means tender young greens and other delicacies are there for the taking out in the yards.

Get Real!
The text of the talk "Get Real: Facing Reality and Crafting Strategies Accordingly," which was given by Eastern Shore Sanctuary coordinator Pattrice Jones at the recent United Poultry Concerns Forum on promoting veganism widely and effectively, is now available as both a web page (for online reading) and a pdf file (for downloading and printing). Included with the text are charts concerning worldwide meat production and US meat consumption, both of which are at all-time highs.
Pattrice argues that, in order to become more effective advocates for the animals, we must: (1) reach more and different populations within and outside of the United States; (2) expend our energies on the best prospects; (3) go global; and (4) get real. Pattrice also offers guidelines to remember when pursuing those goals, such as: (a) "PC" equals Plain Courtesy, (b) coalitions are just good relationships, (c) be prepared, and (d) vegan means all animals.
These ideas are very important to us and we hope that our friends in other organizations will consider and engage in dialogue with us about them. The talk is online at:

Website Update
"Get Real" and the new picture gallery are just two of many additions and improvements to our website this month. We've also added more classic literature; more readings in our archive and on topic pages; and variety of new readings, organizations, and campaigns on our "leftover links" page.
New website visitors should probably start on our home page or the "jump" page, which offers easy access to the most popular sections of the site.

Returning visitors might want to go right to the "what's new?" page to gain easy access to the most recent additions.

Recent & Upcoming Events
As we did last year, the Eastern Shore Sanctuary worked with the local Environmental Student Association to put on a "Meat-Out" event. Participants collected meat-out pledges and then celebrated at a vegan potluck.
Sanctuary cofounder Pattrice Jones will be speaking about feminism and animal liberation at the Animal Liberation Student Association Conference at Syracuse University in April. Karen Davis of United Poultry Concerns will also be speaking, so the chickens will be well represented. For information about the conference, visit
www.cala-online.org/student_association/events.htm
The conference will be the site of the publication party for the forthcoming book "Terrorists or Freedom Fighters: Reflections on the Liberation of Animals." In addition to the chapter on "Feminist Imperatives and the Animal Liberation Front" by Pattrice Jones, the book includes chapters by many friends of the Eastern Shore Sanctuary, including Karen Davis of United Poultry Concerns, Kim Stallwood of the Institute for Animals and Society, Bruce Friedrich of PETA, and Paul Shapiro of Compassion Over Killing. Visit
www.cala-online.org/TOFF/table_of_contents.htm to see the full table of contents and read the introduction. This book is sure to be the subject of intense debate both within and outside of animal advocacy circles. Call Lantern Press at 1-800-856-8664 to reserve your copy.
