A Weekend of Activist Conferences

This Saturday, January 24, Baltimore plays host to the People's Summit 2004, a free day-long conference of community and activist organizations in the Baltimore area.

Meanwhile, down in DC, the 7th annual National Conference on Organized Resistance will take place on Saturday and Sunday on the campus of American University. If you plan well, you can make it to both!
The People's Summit
The Summit will take place at the University of Baltimore School of Law, 1415 Maryland Avenue (corner of Maryland and Mount Royal). Opening remarks begin at 10:00am.  The workshops end at 6pm with tabling and networking to continue.

The People's Summit will bring together community and activist leaders to reflect on the successes and challenges of 2003 and to plan for 2004. The Summit will be an excellent opportunity to network with other activits, and will include workshops and information tables.  More than 30 groups will be represented.

Workshops will cover legal observing, police brutality, and organizing tactics, including topics like "Producing Media for Social Change," "The Miami Model:  Report from the FTAA,"  "Pro-Choice Clinic Defense," "Non-violent Civil Disobedience," and "Media Relations" among others.

On January 23, the evening before the Summit, two presenters from the conference will be speaking at the University of Baltimore at 7 pm on the topic of Bush's judicial nominations.  The speakers include National Lawyers Guild President Michael Avery and Partnership for Civil Justice attorney Mara Verheyden-Hilliard. Free to the public. A reception will follow.

In years past, this conference has played a significant role in coordinating a dialogue between activist groups, and sparking in-depth discussion of the strategies and tactics of our various social justice movements. This year, NCOR again envisions being a forum for cutting edge discussion for people of all different levels of involvement. Last year, over 1,000 people converged on Washington, DC for a weekend of experience, discussion, planning, and protest.

Dozens of organizations and bookstores will have tables and information available, and films will also be shown, but networking, lectures, and workshops are the highlight of the weekend. This year's workshop listing includes a broad range of topics, including animal rights, public relations for activists, globalization, anarchism, independent music, electoral strategies, and a number of discussions about various issues and tactics of interest to activists.

Registration is $10, or you can opt to volunteer to help out in exchange. See www.organizedresistance.org/index.shtml for more information, including directions to the campus and a complete listing of events.
