As Salaamu Alaikum
There will be a rally in support of Brother Sulayman Lindh (John Walker Lindh) at the downtown courthouse in Alexandria, VA at 10:00am on Monday, February 25, 2002.
Sulayman was fighting with the Taliban in Afghanistan until he was captured by Northern Alliance troops and turned over to the United States authorities in early December, 2001. In U.S. custody, he was denied medical treatment for battle wounds, tortured and humiliated by U.S. troops, and refused access to the lawyer that his parents had hired for him. All the government evidence against Sulayman emerges from this period of time when his human and civil rights were abused by U.S. authorities.
John Ashcroft, U.S. Attorney General, has repeatedly condemned Sulayman for abandoning America and American values. Ashcroft was also quoted as saying that "Islam is a religion in which God requires you to send your son to die for him. Christianity is a faith in which God sends his son to die for you."
This comment is indicative of Ashcrofts well-documented bigotry. The flimsy charges brought against Sulayman are a thinly veiled effort to punish an American citizen for accepting and practicing Islam. As Muslims, we must recognize that the case against Sulayman is nothing less than attack against our deen.
Please keep in mind that you have only learned about Sulayman through a biased media. I am so committed to this issue not only because Sulayman is my brother in faith; he is also my cousin. I know him personally and can testify, by Allah, that he has always been a committed and exemplary Muslim.
InshaAllah, please do your best to attend this rally and encourage others to do the same. The U.S. government must understand that Muslims will not tolerate the public slandar and abuse of our brothers and sisters.
Please distribute the attached flyer announcing the rally. If you are unable to attend, please make dua for Sulayman and all the other brothers and sisters who are suffering at the hands of the U.S. government.
