Community to resist misguided school system layoffs
EDUCATION EMERGENCY!!!
THE SCHOOL BOARD IS PLANNING TO FIRE 1000 SCHOOL EMPLOYEES BEFORE NEW YEARS!!
Contrary to Bonnie Copeland's characterizations, essential school staff is being fired. The jobs lost in the school district include many significant positions such as most of the systems curriculum specialists and schools facilities staff. The school board is also firing teachers, classroom aides, ESL staff, and assistant principals. These firings go against both state and federal court orders that mandate school reforms and improvements. Misinformation coming from the school district has portrayed these cuts as necessary to reduce bloated staff. In reality this will result in the failure of our children and perhaps the privatization of the entire school system. The districts deficit may continue to grow and it is highly likely that up to 2,000 additional layoffs will have to take place before the end of the school year. Its time for school board members, the Mayor, the City Council, and our leadership in Annapolis to come up with a better plan for raising revenues rather than selling our public education system to private corporations which will cut benefits and wages of teachers, janitors, painters, academic coaches, and other staff.
