steps for peace walk across the nation was initiated in maine on october 17, 2003 by 21-yr-old jonathan meier. three more walkers have joined him and they will be in baltimore nov 7-9 on their way into DC, where they will commemorate Veteran's Day.
On Friday, October 17, 21-year-old Jonathan Meier began his coast-to-coast journey from Portland, Maine to the California coast by foot on a 4000-mile route to advocate for peace. As he makes connections with individuals and communities along his route, Jonathan also intends this pilgrimage to raise awareness about his Presidential candidate of choice: Dennis J. Kucinich. This walk was initiated and planned by Jonathan, who has been supported along his route by other volunteers. Three more walkers joined him in NYC for the duration of the journey, inlcuding a 25-yr-old woman and a father and son from Kentucky. The Kucinich for President Campaign enthusiastically supports their efforts.
"This is the moment that will change the course of history, because this is the moment that people decided to come together for one grand cause: the cause of global peace. I am walking to let people know that there is someone else who shares this vision -- our vision," Meier said at his kickoff rally in Maine, referring to Kucinich, who is the author of the innovative legilation proposing a cabinet-level US Dep. of Peace.
Since he departed from Portland, ME Jonathan has passed through New Hampshire, Vermont, western Massachusetts, Connecticut, NY, NJ, and DE. Events are being planned around the walk's arrival in Baltimore and DC. They will gather at the Gandhi Memorial in DC to honor the hope, courage, and commitment to nonviolence inspired by Mahatma Gandhi (Kucinich is the recipient of the 2003 Gandhi Peace Award), and will commemorate Veteran's Day with the Baltimore and DC chapters of Veteran's for Peace.
Their arrival in DC will mark the end of the first leg of the journey. The second leg of the journey will take the walkers to Des Moines, Iowa, and the third to San Francisco, California by February 29, 2004: two days before the California primary election.
More than 300 volunteers from 42 states have offered to join the walk when it arrives in their region. These volunteers will be following in the American tradition of conscientious walkers that includes Martin Luther King, Jr. and those who marched for civil rights 40 years ago, as well as Kucinich supporter Granny D, who crossed the country for campaign finance reform in 1999.
Congressman Kucinich said: "Jonathan Meier's endeavor to walk across America is representative of the power of the message of peace and social and economic justice which is resonating in the hearts of all Americans. Jonathan is proving that one person can make a difference and as he marches across the land he reminds America that we must all be on the march for peace, for jobs, for healthcare, for better schools, for civil liberties and for a government we can call our own. We must all be on the march and as we move forward with courage and with joy we will arrive at our next destination, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue."
A page on the Kucinich campaign website is charting the walkers' progress and posting reports from the road. The walkers will be able to speak to the media in the evenings by phone. Use Contact Info below. For more information:
