Traveling Soldier, an anti-war newsletter for people on active-duty, takes up the question: how do we bring the troops home?

Bring them home how?
Politicians claiming to be on your side are blowing a lot of smoke. Some people think if Howard Dean is the Democratic Party candidate and beats Bush in 2004, he will end the war and bring the troops home.
Guess what. Howard Dean says MORE troops should go to Iraq and stay there “until the job is done.” Dean wants to do a job all right – on you.
If soldiers had waited for the politicians to get them home from Vietnam, they’d still be fighting there.
When the 3rd Infantry Division raised hell and told the press they had enough, that did more to get you home than all the speeches by all the politicians in Washington. It made news all over the USA. Bush and Rumsfeld shit their pants, and the Pentagon told you to shut up. "It was the end of the world," said one officer from the 3rd Infantry. "It went all the way up to President Bush and back down again on top of us. At least six of us here will lose our careers."
When soldiers’ families back home, who also told the press that enough was enough, joined the truth-telling troops it created a firestorm of criticism against Bush’s war. Bush and Rumsfeld panicked again and sent the word out to the military families organizing against the war that they, and you, would be punished if they didn’t shut up.
Well, there is good news. The threats failed to stop the movement to end this Imperial oil war and get you back home.
A new movement has been born called Bring The Troops Home Now. It’s made up of active duty troops, veterans, military families, and union members, who see through Bush and his war, and have had enough. Check it out at

The objective is the complete, unconditional withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq. They do not think you should die for oil and corporate greed or be there one more minute.
Their strategy is organizing to build a movement from below that can whip Bush and Rumsfeld to their knees.
Instead of relying on the Democrat and Republican politicians who brought you this war and put you in Iraq, a movement built from the bottom up and taking it to the streets in rallies and mass anti-war demonstrations, could help stop the war. But it won't get anywhere without you.
The soldiers in Vietnam stopped that war by refusing wholesale to fight it anymore. They didn’t act as individuals because that would have been suicidal. But whole platoons, companies and battalions finally just stopped fighting. That did it.
Your job: be careful, be smart, don’t stick your neck out too far, but organize to get the word back home that you and the whole army have had enough, and organize where you are. You know how.
