Baltimore activists,
The Fund for Animals and HSUS are co-sponsoring a
bus to take Virginia/Baltimore/Maryland/DC
activists to New Jersey to help support a rally at
Governor McGreevey's mansion. The ride and lunch
are free for activists. We are protesting because
in March the New Jersey Fish and Game Council
voted to allow the hunting of bears in the state
for the first time in decades. In 2000, when he
was the Mayor of Woodbridge, Jim McGreevey wrote a
letter to then-Governor Whitman urging her to
oppose the proposed bear hunt. We need to bring
attention to this outrageous betrayal of the
bears. Also, allowing the hunt to occur could set
dangerous precedent for other states such as
Maryland that are trying to pass a bear hunting
season.
We are in the process of setting up the Baltimore
stop, and it will probably be along the Southern
perimeter, right off I95. If you are interested
in going, or have any questions, DO NOT REPLY TO
ME, send them to John Goodwin of HSUS at
jgoodwin-AT-hsus.org
Thanks,
Pierre

Local Activists Needed for Rally in New Jersey
New Jersey activists are holding a rally to
protect black bears from hunting, and they need
our help. So The Fund for Animals and the Humane
Society of the United States are renting a bus and
packing vegan lunches. All we need now is 44
activists from the area who are willing to spend a
Saturday to stand up for bears.
DATE: Saturday, September 6th
TIME: Bus is leaving at 7:00 a.m. SHARP
and will return around 4:30 p.m.
Rally is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
PLACE: Bus is leaving from Silver Spring, MD for
trip to Princeton, NJ. (See below for
details.)
The Bear Education and Resource Group and the New
Jersey Animal Rights Alliance are organizing this
important rally outside the mansion residence of
New Jersey Governor James McGreevey, to show the
governor that we are outraged that he has not kept
his campaign promise and will instead allow a
black bear hunt to begin on December 8th.
This rally will send a message to political
officials that spurning the animal protection
community carries political implications. If we
can hold off the hunters in New Jersey, it will
give us momentum in the fight for Maryland bears.
Please bring a pair of flip flops, to signify how
McGreevey has flip flopped on this issue. You may
write a note to the governor on your flip flops,
which will be collected and delivered to his
office in Trenton.
Participants MUST RSVP to John Goodwin at the HSUS
in order to guarantee a seat and lunch. Email him
at
jgoodwin-AT-hsus.org or call (202) 955-3665.
DIRECTIONS:
Meet in the public parking lot next to the
Greyhound station at 8100 Fenton St., in Silver
Spring, Maryland. Parking is free on weekends.
METRO: Take the Red Line to Silver Spring. Take
the escalator at the end of the platform (not the
middle). At the bottom of the escalator, take the
right hand exit which puts you on Colesville Rd.
Head uphill on Colesville Rd. for several blocks.
Turn right at Georgia Ave. and walk for about 6
blocks. You will see the 10-story World Building
on your left. Walk behind the building and
through the parking garage. The parking lot is
behind the garage.
