The Fight to Save Woodberry from Developers Continues!

Please consider helping local activists in trying to save the scenic Woodberry from development by Loyola college.
The City Council of Baltimore has already rubberstamped Mayor O’Malley’s planned destruction of the Woodberry community and forest in order to provide land space for Loyola College’s growth. Woodberry is not even a neighbor of the college. It is 2 miles away. What makes the land attractive to Loyola is that the site they want to build a private use stadium and parking lots is the highest point in Baltimore, looking down on Hampden, Remington, Lower Roland Park, etc.

It doesn’t seem to matter that the site sits atop abandoned, unregulated municipal landfills going back to the 30’s. It doesn’t seem to matter to this administration that the community is nearly unanimously opposed to this. It doesn’t seem to matter that the environmental degradation of the forest and the community is ignored. And, it doesn’t seem to matter that many in the environmental community in Baltimore turned a blind eye, even when asked for help.

It is time for last-minute action now! The Land Disposition Agreement ( LDA) is up for a vote with the Board of Estimates (BOE). President Sheila Dixon will be briefed by Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) on the land deal. It will then be scheduled for a vote by the BOE, either later that week or the next. Don’t think that they make it easy for citizen involvement. The votes are scheduled at 9 am.

Who sits on the Board of Estimates that votes on such land deals? The Mayor, 2 of his appointees (Winfield of Dept. of Public Works and Zollicoffer, the City Solicitor) and 2 elected members, Joan Pratt, Comptroller and Sheila Dixon, President of the City Council.

President Dixon voted with the community but her vote on the BOE is not guaranteed. Nothing is known of Pratt’s position. The others do what the Mayor wants.

Contact them all. Call President Dixon’s office and ask to be notified in advance and to receive the LDA in advance (cblakeney-AT-baltimorecitycouncil.com). This would require that the BOE allows testimony.

The contact information for the rest are: sdixon-AT-baltimorecitycouncil.com, Thurman.Zollicoffer-AT-baltimorecity.gov, joan.pratt-AT-baltimorecity.gov, mayor-AT-baltimorecity.gov and george.Winfield-AT-baltimorecity.gov .

Don’t wait. Do it now. Spread the word!
