Organized by Pax Christi New Mexico, Catholic
peace activists will gather in Santa Fe and in Los Alamos in early August. The Santa Fe gathering is the evening of
August 5th, to pray, analyze the immorality of American weapons of mass destruction, and prepare to make nonviolent pryer-actions they claim can “disarm” Los Alamos National Laboratory the next morning. The gathering at Los Alamos is at 7:00 AM on
August 6th, which is the
58th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of
Hiroshima, Japan. The plans, shared with the Lab security, are simply to vigil, walk, pray & sing.
"Los Alamos is the site of the World War II conspiracy for genocide---the place that still enables our government to terrorize foreigners and to enforce domination of the global economy," says Marc Page of
High Desert Pax Christi in the Diocese of Gallup.
Pax Christi New Mexico is a regional subsection of the national organization (Pax Christi USA), which is part of the international Catholic peace movement. Their work, in the Spirit of Love, is prayer and intellectual study which leads to nonviolent direct action in support of all life on earth.
“This is a spiritual battle,” says
Emily Aversa who started High Desert Pax Christi in 2002.
"Our activity now is witnessing for peace, and calling upon the powers of Heaven to revolutionize the hearts and minds of the workers enslaved by the doctrine of 'peace through nuclear terrorism'.”
Over the past year, Pax Christi New Mexico has grown from a couple of local groups to almost a dozen. More information is available on the website:
