MARYLAND GREEN PARTY PREPARES TO HOST ANNUAL ASSEMBLY
All residents of Maryland are invited to the Maryland
Green Party's annual Statewide Assembly on the campus
of Anne Arundel Community College on June 21. The
event will bring together membership from across the state
and will include a number of educational workshops of
interest to all Maryland residents, focused on Green
policy and practice. We are excited to announce that
confirmed speakers for the event include former
presidential candidate and current Chair of the Center for
Voting and Democracy, John Anderson, and the recently
elected Green, John Eder, member of the Maine House of
Representatives.
Mr. Anderson and Rob Ritchie, both of the Center for
Voting and Democracy, will be leading a workshop on
electoral reform and fair elections, including a special
focus on instant runoff voting (IRV) and proportional
representation. Mr. Eder will be facilitating a
workshop on campaigns and elections with the assistance of
former Maryland Green Party candidates for office,
including Linda Schade and Rick Kunkel, both of whom ran
strong campaigns for the Maryland House of Delegates in
2002.
The Assembly offers additional workshops on cutting
edge topics of value to all citizens. These include a
session discussing the implications of the Patriot Act
and related legislation on American civil liberties and
national security, facilitated by a representative of
the Maryland Chapter of the American Civil Liberties
Union, as well as a session guided by a speaker from
the Program on Corporations, Law, and Democracy designed
to explain the historic context and legal decisions
that laid the groundwork for corporate "personhood,"
including insight into how to address the problems this
causes.
The event is open to the public and there is a $20
registration fee for the day.
