Ground Zero At The Battle Of York
This is an eye-witness account of what happened when a Nazi Skin-Head drove a pickup truck into a crowd of anti-racist demonstrators in York, PA
Yesterday (Saturday January 12, 2002) was by far the most intense day of my life. I went to go protest the racists and white-supremacists and all those other hateful whackos from the National Alliance and World Church of the Creator as a medic, not there to hurt anybody, but to help any person that may have needed first-aid and the like. However, what happened was far worse than any of the medics there could have dealt with. At one point, the Hammerskins and other Nazis were pinned into an alleyway buy the cops and the few hundred protestors composed of anti-racist activists and people of every race, religion, and age from the community. Snowballs and rocks were being thrown, when all of a sudden some maniac Nazi drove a truck with tires screeching through the alleyway that was just barely big enough for the truck. One protestor was struck head on and his body crumpled over the hood and was thrown off as others tried to scramble out of the way. The maniac Nazi then proceeded to stop his car, and he was attacked by everybody that could reach him. He then backed up as fast as he could and drove back into the alleyway. The bewildered protestors and cops went into a frenzy, with cops screaming that they were going to arrest everyone there. I was caught in between around 5 mounted officers and another dozen or so cops in riot gear when the National Guard or some other force with urban assault gear and assault rifles jumped a fence into the crowd. I screamed that I was a medic and somehow the cops let me out of the frenzy. I started to walk away when it seemed as though all of the Guardsmen had a can of pepperspray pointed at me. I put my hands up and told them that I was not going to resist or cause a disturbance in any way, and they let me through. Then I heard somebody scream, "MEDIC!" I went back into the insanity behind me to find that a girl around I would assume was 10-14 years old had been sideswiped by the truck that had minutes before been driven through the crowd. Another medic on the scene was doing what little she could for the girl, such as keeping her calm and treating for shock, as I dialed 911 on my cell phone. I was put through to the dispatcher and requested for EMT back up and an Ambulance. Waiting for the ambulance to arrive, we were approached by around 20 riot cops who proceeded to harass us asking us what we were doing there. We told them that we were medics, but they continued to harass us, and an unidentified woman who knew the girl who was hit (I don't know if the woman was her mother or aunt or just a friend) and was standing up against a building behind the injured girl, screaming at the police asking how they could let this happen. The ambulance then drove up and a medic got out and began to check the injured girl. The cops grabbed the screaming woman as the medic was working on the girl and the cops started a fight right over the girl who had been hit by the truck. As the woman fought back, several black bloc members rushed the cops and attempted to pull them off. One of the block bloc members in a valiant attempt to free the woman tackled a cop and was then grabbed by 3 other riot officers. As they pinned him down and got the cuffs out, the cops were hit again, and the bloc member was yanked up and flung into the crowd and disappeared. Watching this, it was then that I noticed the ambulance fleeing the scene. Everyone was screaming at them because they left the girl at the scene. The bewildered girl was lifted up and dragged to the door of the ambulance when the EMT let her in and drove her to the hospital. At this point, I just couldn't take it anymore, and I left with a friend of mine. Everyone that I went with made it out with minor abrasions and bruises, as well as being really shaken up.
When I got up this morning around 11, I went to check to see what was on IndyMedia, and found out that the person who drove his truck through the crowd was not charged with attempted murder or aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but was RELEASED on bail with a disorderly persons offense.
I was appalled at the lack of any semblance of justice in the York City police department. I urge all members of the action yesterday to let their voices be heard so that this gross lack of any justice will not go unpunished. This man is guilty of hate crimes ending with assault with a truck on at least 2 people.
As for me, you can be sure that I will not stop until every single Nazi who has hurt anybody because of their race or religion is put into jail and never let out.
