STREET VOICE: MR. BUSH'S WAR
A commentary on the Iraq War from Baltimore's inner city. From the upcoming issue of STREET VOICE.
Does George Bush think the people of the inner cities of this country see him any differently than the people of Iraq see Saddam Hussein? Does he really think that any black American feels less oppressed because he sent troops to fight a war half way around the world? He talks about freeing
the downtrodden people of Iraq, when poor folks in the cities he runs are starving and throwing their babies in dumpsters.
Mr. Bush may appear on national television and utter words and phrases that somebody else wrote for him; he may stand in front of his house on
Pennsylvania Avenue and expound on the American Ideal of freedom, but until he walks down Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore and gets chased off the sidewalk by one of our cat-sized rats, I say he doesn't have a clue as to what the desire for freedom really means.
Does he really think we don't know that he's pretending to be John Wayne? He can slip out of his suit and put on an Air Force flight jacket,
and pretend to be one of the common folk, but does he really think that "Aw, shucks, ma'am I just want to save the farm" bullshit he passes off as a caring attitude works on people who have to hustle to get up the rent money?
I have news for you, Mr. Bush: it ain't working. The war you fight is the wrong one. The war you ought to be fighting is at your door step. Go down
behind the Treasury building in your city after 10 o'clock on any night and you'll see the people you should be trying to liberate. The homeless
men who sleep on the warm air grates on the side walk will be happy to tell you who needs to be freed. Take a stroll down by Haynes Point on any
day of the week and you will see Black, White, and Hispanic men and women who struggle to feed themselves day to day. Men and women who have lost
hope for anything better than a meager meal.
No denizen of the Inner City believes you are fighting a just war. The war you fight is not about freedom, Mr. Bush, the war you fight is all about oil, and controlling its flow. That is what the people of the inner cities know. Other than
sacrificing our children to your war, what will we benefit? Not much, I think.
The war you should be fighting is much closer than the Middle East, Mr. Bush. It is as close as your neighborhood.
