Anti-war activists rally in Annapolis
Peace vigil in Annapolis
Activists in Annapolis -- home of the U.S. Naval Academy -- took to the streets the day after bombing began in Iraq to express their outrage at the war and to pay solemn witness to the deaths that have already taken place in Iraq and those that will happen in the future.
The group starting meeting at 5 pm at the City Dock. After that there was a march to Church Circle, where they could take their message to the evening's commuters. Some activists quietely held candles, some held high signs decrying war, and some boisterously protested self-interested and dangerous US foreign policy. They demanded that domestic issues such as education and health care take priority over a wrong-headed emphasis on controlling the oil flow in the Middle East.
The activists stretched single file around the circle. Many motorists honked in support of the demonstration, although many in this military town expressed hostility and made the bewildering claim that activists were supporting Saddam and his brutal policies. The protestors were not deterred, however, and they continued to voice their opposition well into the evening. Afterwards, they reconvened for a town meeting to reflect and plan next steps.
