AntiWar Teach-In at Towson Feb 13
The Towson AntiWar Coalition will hold a teach-in on Thursday, February 13 on the impending war in Iraq. Topics will include the sanctions, reasons for the war, the war's effect at home and abroad, and alternatives.
The Towson AntiWar Coalition, a new group at Towson University, will hold a teach-in from 11am-6pm on Thursday, February 13 in the Potomac Lounge of the University Union. See below for the schedule.
The format will include speakers on a variety of topics followed by question and answer periods. There will also be information available on the February 15 demonstration in NY and tables from a variety of organizations. Snacks will be provided and one area will be set-aside for sign/banner making.
Schedule of Speakers (speakers and times are subject to change)
11:00- Introductions by the Towson Anti-War Coalition
11:15- Nicole Dombrowski—Professor of History at Towson University specializing in gender and military conflict. Will be speaking on: "Civilian Displacement and the inevitable Refugee Crisis"
11:45- Marwan Hatabeh—International Student from Palestine studying for his Masters at Morgan State University. Will speak on: "The impact that a war on Iraq will have in regards to Israel and Palestine"
12:15- Ellen Barfield—Full time peace and justice activist, member of Voices in the Wilderness-a campaign to end the economic sanctions against the people of Iraq. Will be presenting a slide show from her trips to Iraq and discussing the impact of sanctions.
1:15- Max Obuszewski—Iraq Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore, Baltimore Emergency Response Network, and works for the American Friends Service Committee. Will be presenting: "Peace and Non-Violence, an alternative to War"
2:00- Paul Collinson-Streng—Lutheran Campus Pastor. Will be presenting: "Christian opposition to war-Why this war is wrong"
2:30- Video Showing: “Iraq: Journey to the Forbidden Kingdom” Shows impact of sanctions and the use of depleted uranium weapons on the population of Iraq
3:00- Bill Harvey Local Activist with Coalition Against Global Exploitation, member of the Green party. Will be presenting: "War: What's in it for us?"
3:45- Walt Fuchs Professor of Philosophy at Towson University. Will be presenting: "The doctrine of the pre-emptive strike--A doctrine of permanent war?"
4:30- Paul Kramer History Professor at John Hopkins University. Topic is unkown.
5:00- Penny Howard and Josh Brown: Members of Baltimore SUSTAIN (Stop U.S. Tax-Funded Aid to Israel Now), Left Turn, and CAGE. Will be speaking on: “U.S. Motivations for a war with Iraq” Open floor discussion to follow and close up the day.
