UMD Peace Forum Protests at the Comcast Center
University of Maryland Students brought their anti-war message to the UMD basketball game at the Comcast Center to protest the Comcast Censors decision not to air a paid-for anti-war ad during the State of the Union.
Today, Sunday the 2nd of February, at 11:30 activists from the University of Maryland Peace Forum gathered in front of the Comcast Center an hour and a half before gametime of the Loyola(Baltimore) - UMD basketball match. The seven or eight individuals were protesting the decision by comcast not to air paid-for anti-war ads during the president's State of the Union address. Comcast ironically claimed that the ads made unsubstantiated claims.
Meanwhile, the Institute for Public Accuracy in Reporting prepared a long list of unsubstantiated or deceptive claims made by the president that Comcast aired. The students passed out to the basketball fans fliers that drew attention to this occurance and promised to bring the anti-war message to Comcast. At the rush right before tip-off, unidentified activists dropped a banner reading "We Stand for Peace." The banner stayed up for duration of the protest, campus police and state troopers were as apathetic about the protesters as they were about the scalpers. A representative of the campus newspaper came and took pictures and testimony. Shortly after tip-off the action dispersed, but the group spoke of repeating the action until Comcast broadcasted an anti-war message whether they meant to or not.
