Health care bill, now in hands of the Senate, ignores every industrial threat and harm to health. It finds that people's behavior is the biggest threat. Could this be because all Senators are economically-linked to health-harming industries, AND their insurers and investors? Sworn and public-paid Congress members wouldn't go AWOL on their solemn oaths and duties to the people, would they?

As democratic socialists, Socialist Party USA stands in solidarity with the student protests. We encourage all students, especially those at publicly-funded universities, to draw inspiration from the UC protests. Democratic socialism advances our just demands that everything that make us human be guaranteed. Food, employment, healthcare, housing and education are our social rights. Now is the time to demand them.

While elected representatives go back and forth deciding what they believe they can vote for and not cost themselves the next election we watch them, see them and learn something new about each. Being careful about one's career is well and good as everybody needs to work and no person wants to see their career end. In elected office losing one's career can be especially bruising, crushing and always public. That part of the resume will be google ready for years to come. Of course that is a part of the job.

Stewart Alexander says, “It is time for students to revolt, not by laying in the streets and not by organizing student demonstrations chanting ‘Shame on you!’ It must be a revolt using voter registration cards and making a change in the voting booth; this will be the only student action that the Democrats and Republicans will understand.”
