Big Oil Companies Back California Referendum to Repeal Climate Change Regulations

In 2006, California passed a ground-breaking law to address climate change, known as AB-32 or the Global Warming Solutions Act. In the face of inaction by the federal government on climate change, this state law requires California to reduce its global warming emissions -- including carbon dioxide and five other gases -- to 1990 levels by 2020. That would be a 25 percent reduction over current levels and would put California in compliance with requirements specified in the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which the U.S. never ratified.
