please cross-post widely.
Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church and
www.godhatesfags.com &
www.godhatesamerica.com fame is coming to College Park, MD, on Nov. 8-10 to
protest our school's decision to distribute The Laramie Project, a play about
Laramie Wyo.'s reactions to Matthew Shepard's murder. Phelps et al. have
been known to protest the funerals of gay men who have died of AIDS.
We intend to oppose him.
It is most likely in everyone's best interests that nobody attempt to assault
Phelps et al., especially on campus, because he tends to play the media very
well, and has the resources to drag it out into court in order to milk it for
media attention. Creative responses are always welcome, though.
Here's the schedule, from his website. He's promised to protest the opening
night of the play The Laramie Project, our homecoming football game, and also
5 "fag-enabling" local churches. However, he only lists four on his flier.
God hates math, too, apparently. Here's the schedule, plus stuff UMD is
doing in response:
11/8 (friday): 2:30pm - meet at Pride Alliance Office, 3104 Stamp Student
Union, to march in homecoming parade (on-campus, see map). There will be an
anarch@-queer contingent.
4pm - Homecoming parade with queer contingent. Farm Drive from lot 2A to lot
9B. (on-campus)
6pm: The angels assemble at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (CSPAC).
7:15 pm Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (CSPAC) (on-campus, see map
below) - Phelps protest. At the same time, same place, there will be a drum
circle against hate.
11/9 (Sat.): TBA Byrd Stadium (on-campus). Fred Phelps protest. Don't know
when he'll be here. Kick-off is at noon. So guess around then.
7:15pm CSPAC (on-campus).
11/10 7:25am Holy Redeemer Catholic Church (off campus): 4902 Berwyn Rd.
This is about 3 or 4 blocks from the campus main entrance. Berwyn Rd (not to
be confused with Berwyn House Rd) intersects with Rt. 1, where the big
colorful mural is.
8:05am: First United Methodist Church (off campus): 6201 Belcrest Rd. Don't
know where that is. Follow Fred et al. from the first protest.
9am: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church 4512 College Ave (off-campus). That's
where all those punk rawk shows used to be. behind the Maryland Book
Exchange. College Ave. intersects with Rt. 1.
9:30am: Hope Lutheran Church 4201 Guilford Dr. (off-campus). Guilford also
intersects with Rt. 1, and is about 3 blocks past College Ave.
