The tree is the economic measures, the forest is the constitutional rights. For the forest people went on the streets in December 2008, now they are out for the tree
IMPEACH AND PROSECUTE PRESIDENT PAPOULIAS, REPRESENTATIVES, JOURNALISTS AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CURRENT ORWELLIAN REGIME IN GREECE
Our system has still not recovered from the dangerous chemicals that government forces showered us with on May 5th outside the parliament in Athens while we still mourn the deaths of the bank hostages and slaves of Vgenopoulos (owner of Marfin Bank), yet some still find the courage and strength to express what months and years, has been under a vicious attack. Our constitutional rights.
For 18 months the government has suspended the constitution and has become an Orwellian styled police-state, it does not allow freedom of speech in public, the freedom to chose an ideology and philosophy, the freedom to gather in public places. In Exarchia district, where all residents and visitors are targeted as a single ideological group, the police has tried to eliminate everyone present during its raids. In other parts of Athens exercises uncontrolled and unnecessary violence without provocation towards immigrants, street vendors, unemployed, while mass media interprets the rampant violence of this kind as justified with a populist and racist interpretation. On the other hand demonstrably Neo-Nazi aligned thugs, friends and comrades of police officers, are engaging in brutal and lethal attacks against immigrants, their allies, free squats, protesters, side by side to SWAT battalions.
On May 5th 2010, once again, hours after an unprecedented demonstration had ended against austerity measures implemented, the marshal law enforcement teams beat and arrested people indiscriminately in Exarchia district who had the misfortune to be on the streets, even in front of a building entrances, some indoors, some in cafes, and restaurants. They smashed shops' windows and illegally invaded private spaces and youth squats. Under what kind of Goebbelian constitution did representatives meet, and what kind of "democratic parties" were they members of while all these atrocities, human rights violations, are going on in the streets near parliament?
Violence brings violence, and they know it all too well that to break a versatile popular movement from the extra-parliamentary left to anarchism, from anti-racism to libertarianism, they should attribute the blame for violence to the popular movement. To fabricate evidence and produce victims to defeat its popular support. This is the game played while the occupational government's media is striving to interpret the state's actions as protection for citizens and business, and brand the anti-state movement as violent. Hard to explain this to young children playing guitar in a park with their friends and being brutally attacked with batons and run over by police motorcycles. This only a few hundred meters where police executed in cold blood a 15 year old on his birthday December 6th 2008. Since then 2 more people have been shot and killed by police forces elsewhere in Athens. In cold blood, without due process, without documenting any public threat!
The regime is suppressing freedom of speech, freedom of gathering in public places and the free exchange of ideas, even if these ideas are against the regime and the constitution itself. The suspension of the constitution protecting these rights in any dictionary refers to the definition of a coup. While journalists on strike were being attacked on the streets of Athens, the US State Department and its international network of news services, US friendly media were terrorizing viewers of the wrath and criminal activity of protesters. More than 200 000 people in Greece took to the streets to exercise a constitutional right to protest the austerity measures and were branded killers for the actions of a gangster who set a bank front into fire, while employees inside had been threatened for weeks they would lose their jobs immediately if they joined a strike, working inside a bank that illegally had no fire escape exits, no extinguishing system, for which the government has displayed no interest in enforcing. Still today banks are allowed to operate under the same conditions, security doors with time delay and no emergency exits, no fire extinguishing systems, no fire-station certificates, are trapping the public and their employees indoors only to collect profits, illegal fees, fines, and state subsidies. This police-regime is an armed robbery of the people in this land and no political voice exists to condemn this constitutional suspension. It is orchestrated by financiers, media owners, and government leaders and party representatives. A conspiracy without precedence under dictator Papoulias who denies this is going on!
In this coup climate the suspension of basic freedoms protected by the Constitution and after centuries of popular struggle imposed to each state to recognize, the 300 hypocritical representatives elected meet to discuss austerity measures. How can they mask themselves and pretend to be participants of a democratic process regulating finances while severe human rights violations are taking place outside their windows? They are all members of the armed robbery gang that is taking place. They will all be held responsible to be tried for treason and participation to the brutal coup and have the same fate of the leaders of the 7 year coup of 1967.
Let us not accept the populism of the significance of WTO, IMF, Eurozone, bond crisis, and financial measures as being the forest, it is just a tree, it is basic human rights violated that is the forest. This has been the flood of propaganda by mass media to portray residents as pure economic beings without touching the issues of human rights taken away. What is so clear to us in the street it is intentionally covered up by mass media and untouched by political speech of the mainstream 5 party system. On the one hand the capitalist system of values, and on the other hand the system of Marxist critique of capitalism, portray the residents as economic units of production, neglecting their social aspects and rights to gather and communicate freely. The current political environment fails to display how residents are being terrorized from public places all over Greek cities. The right to meet, communicate, and organize, are not economic values and are intentionally neglected in this fabricated environment. The city parks have been handed out to construction companies for years to redesign, to open the view up for cops, cut trees and bushes, place cameras and microphones everywhere, and make space for multinational corporations to built cafes and restaurants (all public controlled environments), in others immigrants are brutally beaten, arrested, by racist thugs and cops. Drug bazaars of toxic substances, under the protection of the local police, prostitution rings, while police motorcycle gangs have used plazas for stunt practicing and crowd control clashing. This is the current situation in Greece, a grandmother with grandchild trying to spend time in a playground while parents work second or third shift to make a living, drug smugglers hanging out with high rank police undercover officers, prostitutes working for the police, and young gangsters in police uniforms (Zita, Delta, Dias) doing wheelies and other stunts in front of the grandmother and kid in the playground. In this glorious extreme scenario that even Hollywood would find far fetched, activists of all kinds have been treated by politicians and media as engaging in unnecessary violence. Meanwhile people already stressed to the limits of poverty have been steered to demand from bosses economic rights, too busy to see what has been already taken away from them. What is taken away everyday! Freedom and free space!
A coup is not the armored tanks and military violence, it is the suspension of basic human rights protected by the constitution! The economic crisis is a pretext masking of the coup. The lawmakers and "representatives of the people" who voted for austerity measures on May 6th know this very well and bear the political responsibility. The journalists know this as well and have been mysteriously silenced. Some of them have served under these three conditions, the journalist during the dictatorship of 67-74, the representative in parliament, and a member of the current coup. Academic scholars know as well having colleagues who have been legally prosecuted for their support of the university asylum (the war against the Indymedia and other intrusions in the physical space of the asylum). The next step is to shut and prosecute publishers for reproducing documents and leaflets denouncing this coup.
Leaders of all sorts, in politics, media, economy, academy, were invited to either join these dictators and stay silent or be branded as supporters of terrorism. Does this remind you of the ex-US president declaring war on human rights globally. The GW Bush doctrine is still alive and kicking elsewhere, banking conglomerates have learned the trick and as a tidal wave are replicating it elsewhere. Some leaders of the left said that the street violence is the tree, the economic austerity measures implemented is the forest. The tree is the economic measures, the forest is peoples' constitutional rights. It was the forest that brought people on the streets in December 2008. They now are going out for the tree of diversion, their pockets. It was that public reaction to the coup that had already been initiated they have attempted to divert attention from and minimize its importance and interpretation.
EXARCHIA HAS A LONG HISTORY OF BATTLING FOR FREEDOM AND HAS THEREFORE BEEN CONVERTED TO A WAR ZONE BETWEEN FASCISTS AND THE PASSION FOR FREEDOM
