Today, public education is being challenged by corporations that have an interest in taking control over public education. Stewart Alexander says he would agree that the educational system is flawed; however, “We cannot abandon education to the private sector, for-profit corporations. Corporations are concerned with the bottom line, increasing profits; this will result in having non-union teachers and workers and increase cost for the public sector.”

As the California governor’s race approaches the June 8th Primary Election, Governor Candidate Stewart Alexander has received the support and endorsement of Jack Gerson. Jack Gerson is an advocate for teachers and a labor organizer. In January, Stewart Alexander received the official endorsement of Socialist Party USA and also the endorsement of Third Party Revolution.
Jack Gerson is a leader with the Oakland Education Association (OEA). The organization is based in Oakland, California and represents 2,800 teachers, counselors, nurses, psychologists, librarians, speech pathologists, social workers and substitute teachers in K-12. Jack Gerson and the OEA are strong opponents to the privatization of public education and have outlined a vision to “Create Success” that rejects privatization.
Alexander has charged that the Republican front-runner Meg Whitman and Democrat Jerry Brown are both on the wrong side of the education issue with agendas that will not increase funding for public education; Alexander has also charged that both candidates are union busters. “Whitman and Brown oppose amending Prop 13 to eliminate the commercial property exemption for big businesses. Both candidates support more prisons in California, the candidates are strong supporters of California’s Three Strikes law and both candidates support privatizing California’s public school system.”
While serving as Mayor of Oakland, Jerry Brown supported funding for military charter schools and quadrupled the number of students in privatized schools. Brown’s involvement helped weaken public education in Oakland and nationally. Brown played a leading role in pushing this attack on public education. Alexander says “If this is the leadership (Whitman and Brown) the two corporate parties are offering, then Californians need to seriously consider a third party choice for California governor.”
Jack Gerson and Stewart Alexander are urging California voters to register with the Peace and Freedom Party for the upcoming June 8th Primary Election. The PFP will have a full slate of candidates for the statewide election.
