Governor Candidate Alexander: California Governor’s Seat Could Cost $200 Million

Republican billionaire Meg Whitman has stated that she will spend up to $150 million of her own money to be governor and Republican Steve Poizner wrote a $15 million check as down payment on the governor’s office. The un-contended Democrat, Attorney General Jerry Brown is hoping to challenge Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner with the backing of casinos, unions and third party committees.

The office of California Governor pays an annual salary of $173,987; however, the three top Republican and Democrat contenders, hoping to be the next governor of California will more than likely spend over $200 million for the governor’s seat.

Jerry Brown, who was California governor from 1975 to 1983, has $14 million on hand for campaigning. California finance laws allows unlimited contributions to independent committees; therefore, Jerry Brown has been openly seeking support from third party groups and committees as a political resource instead of receiving their direct financial backing to his campaign, thereby circumventing campaign finance law.

Meg Whitman has been spending generously on her campaign. The candidate has been spending millions weekly on statewide television and radio ads introducing herself to voters. With no political experience, the former eBay chief executive is also gaining support from the corporate titans on Wall Street; to include: Cisco Systems Chief Executive John Chambers and eBay Chief Executive John Donahoe. A year ago, Whitman was virtually unknown to California voters.

There are many similarities between Meg Whitman’s run for governor and the campaign of Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003; both are extremely wealthy. Meg Whitman has never run for political office, and prior to running for governor in 2003, Governor Schwarzenegger had little or no political experience. Meg Whitman has admitted that she failed to vote until recently.

Meg Whitman has been touting her success in business as the former CEO of eBay, Inc. Governor Schwarzenegger touted his success as a business leader, actor and body-building super star; however, more than four million California voters would not look beyond Schwarzenegger’s super star appeal to understand the actor was not prepared to govern California.

Meg Whitman is relaying on former Governor Pete Wilson to help direct and chair her campaign. Arnold Schwarzenegger also relied on Pete Wilson to help bolster his campaign for governor 2003. Many of the failed policies that have crippled California government can be directly attributed to Pete Wilson.

Stewart Alexander, the PFP Candidate for California Governor says, “Whitman, like Schwarzenegger is for big business. The only difference between Whitman and Schwarzenegger is that Schwarzenegger used his star power to gain political power. Whitman is prepared to buy the office of governor like a commodity on eBay.”

Alexander says it is time that voters look beyond the high price television ads and multi-million dollar advertising campaigns and get the facts up front; where the candidates stand on creating jobs, single-payer health care, same-sex marriage rights, immigrant rights, the right to receive a free education and the war. “Unfortunately, the answers to the hard questions are often lost in the 30 second radio and television ads, paid for by the candidates and the committees who are protecting the interest of big money.”
