Might want to check out H.R.2674, entitled, Protecting America's Children Act of 2009. My reading indicates that under this bill there is no identified offender type or class of offender. Instead, someone can be jailed merely for having the audacity to be accused of a crime.As a result, the accused could be jailed for up to 2 years without a trial. Now this is perhaps not an issue if the person is truly guilty, but consider the impact on the innocent.

After 2 years in jail: Any career they had is now toast; Without income their chance of hiring a attorney is just about 0; Their family life is likely destroyed; Their reputation is ruin; They are likely brutalized while in prison; They have likely suffered mental/emotional trauma; and Even if/when they are released their chance at being a productive member of society is slim Moreover, given that this is FEDERAL legislation, the impact is huge and sweeping--this will take hold not just in a few states, but across the nation!

The language and title of this bill is VERY MISLEADING designed to make someone believe the bill is about protecting children from sex offenders--BS! Introduced by Rep. Ted Poe (who often relies on misquotes and erroneous stats), this is just one more step moving us toward an INQUISITORIAL system (guilty until proven innocent) rather than that ADVERSARIAL system (innocent until proven guilty) on which this nation was founded.

Poe should be ashamed! Dept. of Justice and DHS stats show that most children, sadly, are harmed BY THEIR OWN PARENTS AND CLOSE FAMILY MEMBERS! We need meaningful--federal--legislation that truly changes the status of children under the law; makes family violence (including porn to the extent that it harms women & children) a CRIME; opens family court to public scrutiny; holds the judiciary personally accountable; and prevents children from being forced to have visitation/custody with a parent of whom they are afraid or do not wish to see!

Children are not property and deserve a say in their lives!
