On Saturday the 28th of November, the Human Rights Group teamed up with Youth for Human Rights Florida to create a fundraising effort on ice. Almost 100 people showed up at the Ice skating rink at Countryside Mall in Clearwater and raised hundreds of dollars for the 4th annual Human Rights Walkathon which will be held in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 6, 2010. Saturday’s fundraiser is one in a series of events to raise money for the Walkathon, which is being co-sponsored by the City of St. Petersburg, Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking and Tampa Bay Academy of Hope. Thousands of members of dozens of diverse groups across Florida and some from other countries, will attend. So far, the Human Rights Group has held a Tea Party in September, an ice skating party in October and plans to host several more tea, ice skating parties and different fun filled events to complete their fundraising efforts.

The groups will also team up on Human Rights Day December 10th for a 2 mile walk across Memorial Bridge in Clearwater, an effort which will be duplicated in 10 other countries around the world on the same day.

The Human Rights group considers the many great men and women who have promoted human rights such as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and L. Ron Hubbard who once said: “Human Rights must be made a fact not an idealistic dream”.

Both the Human Rights Group and Youth for Human Rights Florida are raising awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 1948 document created just after World War II and promoted by Eleanor Roosevelt to discourage the need for any future wars. The groups address different types of organizations but have carried out hundreds of other presentations on human rights throughout the Tampa bay area.
