Maryland Public Service Commission Condemned Over French Nuclear Deal

THE MARYLAND PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION APPROVED THE CONSTUCTION OF A THIRD NUCLEAR REACTOR NEAR CALVERT CLIFFS I AND II IN LUSBY, MARYLAND.

BY ALLOWING CONSTELLATION ENERGY TO BUILD THIS REACTOR WITH ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE (EDF) THE PSC HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE THE BEST INTEREST OF MARYLANDERS AT HEART.

The PSC should have considered:

1. The disastrous radiologic contamination by EDF of the French Southern countryside and even worse near La Hague at the Northern coast of France
2. The design flaws of the experimental EPR reactor in Flamanville, (France) and Finland
3. The severe cost overruns that are known to occur with every new construction of reactors
4. Numerous analysis of Economists predict the cost of energy from nuclear power will likely be above 37c/KWH, that means it will triple for Marylanders
5. That nuclear power giants crowd out cheaper renewable energy companies (wind, sun and thermal energy)
6. That renewable energy can come on line in 2, 3 or 4 years filling energy needs in a timely way and considering savings through efficiency
7. That energy needs have dropped in the last 1- 2 years but you went ahead anyway and condemned Marylanders to the MOST EXPENSIVE ENERGY: NUCLEAR ENERGY in the USA

YOU SHOULD HAVE CONSIDERED THE REAL AND TRUE COST OF NUCLEAR POWER:

1. High cancer rates, respiratory ailments and heart disease in counties surrounding Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plants
2. Leukemia in young children
3. Pregnant women and the Unborn subject to radiation from daily radioactive releases into the air, TRITIUM in particular is known to incorporate into all cells, resulting in abnormalities
4. A dying Chesapeake Bay, contamination of fish and shell fish, millions of fish dying at the water intake of nuclear power plants
5. Enormous use of water with devastating effects on groundwater; the depletion of the underlying aquifer, wells that must be dug deeper and deeper
6. High cost of containment of radioactive waste, cost of decommissioning the nuclear power plant

PSC - YOUR DEAL MAKING COULD HAVE PRICED CONSTELLATION/EDF OUT OF OUR MARKET BY:

1. Demanding HEALTH CARE for every resident in the surrounding counties of a new plant
2. Setting a price for every gallon of WATER used during construction and for every day of operating the plant
3. Demanding that an independent agency MONITORS AIR AND WATER QUALITY IN appropriate distances and height near plant, also agricultural products
4. Have a panel of medical experts OVERSEE THE HEALTH OF THE COMMUNITIES

PSC - YOU FAILED ALL MARYLANDERS! You voted for the MOST DANGEROUS ENERGY!
Conscientious and informed Marylanders will continue to fight the construction of Calvert Cliffs III!

Dagmar Fabian earned her BS in Medical Technologies and X-ray Technology. She started work in Virology in Germany then worked for thirty seven years in the US as Scientist at several universities of the East Coast in immunology and cancer research. The last ten years of work were spent at Johns Hopkins University as a lab manager and scientist. Blood diseases like lymphomas and HIV were the focus of that research. She retired in 2006.

In 2008 she joined PAARC and other activist groups who work to stop nuclear proliferation, stop the expansion of nuclear power plants and as a Marylander halt the construction of Calvert Cliffs 3. Dagmar Fabian is passionate about educating people to alert them to the mortal danger of radiation in our environment and to the toll this radiation has taken on the genetic material of all citizens. The accumulated effect of radiation emanating from 104 nuclear power plants has turned this “Age of Technology” into the “AGE OF CANCER”.
